Sun Dune
A Mixed-use Development in a Royal Reserve in the Nufud Desert, Saudi Arabia, 2023
The Sun is the Architecture of the Landscape
Power. Prominence. Flare. Light.
But its major and most delicate value is its timelessness
The Architecture of Imam Turki Bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve is its Landscape, and we perceive the Landscape mainly through its Sun. This project honors the center of our solar system, the center of the reserve - the sun. It is a landscape paradise, a unique piece of nature. Our vision of architecture merges art with technology to preserve the fundamental architecture - Nature. Wild. Solitary. Silent. Sublime. The "sun" emerges from a sand dune that the energies and forces have created over the years. The sun in the dune promotes innovative approaches that are environmentally sustainable, socially sensitive, and culturally appropriate - inspired by the reserve's natural terrain. When the sun touches the dune, a belt of asteroids unites the sun and the desert - the Resort Dune Villas. Architecture is merged with nature, and an oasis is created to bring life to the center of the desert. The 'moon' is set in the sand dune from which this entire structure emerges. The sun, the moon, and the oasis are in perfect harmony with the earth and the sand dunes. This project aims to honor the morphology of the landscape, bringing it to our contemporary time. The luxury of the guest accommodation is perceived in a unique way, where intimacy meets the openness of the landscape, and offers rich and diverse experiences. The dune's mesmerizing night sky merges with the inner light of the sun's halo, which is majestic in the way it welcomes its residents and visitors, and the way it remains monumental and unique to the world.
